Dementia--a force to reckon with

A bell rang ..shrill and loud echoing into the silence of the lounge....as the door was opened I saw two worried faces staring onto my face....they enquired as to whether it was my visiting time...I said yes and they came in...They were worried about their mother who was ''forgetting everything''....!!!!It's the enemy
''dementia''..I understood...!!!!Dementia can be frightful...but curable to a certain extent...The kids brought their mother to me...and I started my tryst with destiny..it continues to its 4th day now....the consultation starts with Sushila (the patient)narrating her daily activities step by step...tym by tym...!!!then a few brain active-exercises...meditation....studying pictures and reproducing them and asubtlechange in diet....She says she feels better and more energetic...I only hopeI am able to bring back a normal-memorymother for her kids.

psychological disorder.....whats that?

One bright sunny Sunday morning while I was sitting at my clinic in namma Chennai a 45 year old woman rushes into my otherwise silent haven .....she was as I could see a victim of mental unrest or is it dramatic swings, hallucinations or religious delusions.....Many thoughts and conclusions ran through my mind...Is she suffering from hysteria....a nervous condition the Viennese neurogist Sigmund Freud.....believed to be treatable....or was it the common schizophrenia.....i doubted.....what was this.....mental unrest....being mentally distraught.....could i term it Psychological Disorder......when ones state of mind goes hay-wire
This unrest could be treated not by chains or drugs or in modern medical terms...ECT....but by understanding, talking and listening.....In this age there are many silent and receptive means of treatmet which will rehabilitate and rejuvenate the mind....body and soul.....Like....music,yoga and pursuing ones hobbies...

bi-polar disorder....a vicious cycle

What is bi-polar disorder?

also known as mania-depression disorder .......two different states of mind....mania is the opposite of depression characterized by restless activity, excitement, laughter,a mostly happy mood ,rambling speech and loss of inhibitions In extreme cases maniacs are dangerous to themselves.

depression....its sad

DEPRESSION.......is feeling down in the dumps.....you feel fearful and gloomy...helpless and hopeless...it often happens for you,me and everyone......its a common phenomena...a state of mind everybody experiences.....but when it varies...and increases
...ie ....the person becomes unproductive, inactive and mannerisms change....the depression phase is questionable.

How can you recognize a state of depression?

A person who is depressed lacks sleep, paces up and down the room, wrings their hands in anxiety.Depressed people almost have trouble sleeping. On the average they take longer than most people to fall asleep. After sleeping restlessly they awaken too early and cannot go back to sleep.During the day they consequently feel drowsy.

Events that trigger depressed episodes.......

Hormonal changes are one example of an event that can trigger a depressive episode....studies indicate that women experience depression on the day before or the first day of menstruation.....similarly after pregnancy also ....most women experience the blues....for a day or two after delivery..because of pain, hospital atmosphere, emotional upheaval and hormonal changes.....failure in exams....can rigger of acute depression....marital discord....stress......and illness can lead to various forms of depression.

Antidepressants and cognitive behaviour theraphy....in fact cognitive theraphy is as effective for many types of depression. In modern forms of treatment....music meditation and transcedental meditation are fast catching on....holistic treatment is also effective...in the initial stages.
